Freeze the accession negotiations with Turkey now
During today’s debate, ALDE leader Guy Verhofstadt called on the Council and the Commission to freeze the accession negotiations with Turkey.
During the debate he said: “It is very cynical that Erdogan calls the Netherlands “fascist”, while at the same time he turns Turkey into an autocratic state.
“He asks for freedom of speech in Europe for his Ministers, but at the same time he is jailing critical journalists. Europe must unite and put pressure on Erdogan to free the German journalist Deniz Yücel immediately.”
“Instead of more declarations, we must freeze the accession negotiations with Turkey now.”
On the celebration of the Treaty of Rome, Verhofstadt said: “We should not celebrate the Europe we had, but we have to work hard on the Europe we want. We need less and more Europe. Less bureaucracy, but more European capacities to tackle the global challenges we face.”
ALDE Vice-President Nils Torvalds (Finland, Svenska folkpartiet) added: “As long as we have to found a way to make European and national law more compatible, we will keep on facing the same problems. Solving this conundrum should be the priority to make Europe work again.”
