Rohingya people: ALDE Group calls on the EU to adopt sanctions against Myanmar’s government

MEPs urge the military and security forces in Myanmar to put an immediate end to the killing, harassment and rape of the Rohingya people. In a resolution adopted today in plenary, the European Parliament calls on the Government of Myanmar to initiate prompt, impartial, independent and effective investigations into all credible allegations of violations of international human rights law and crimes under international law.

ALDE MEP, Urmas Paet (Estonian Reform Party), who negotiated the resolution on behalf of our Group, said the EU should react immediately:

“The EU needs to increase pressure on Myanmar. We should adopt punitive sanctions against those responsible for human rights abuses in Myanmar, broaden the existing arms embargo and suspend trade preferences and negotiations on an EU-Myanmar investment treaty.

Before any Rohingya refugees can return to Myanmar, there must be credible assurances that they can do so voluntarily, safely and under full UN oversight. Monitoring of the situation of the Rohingyas in Myanmar by human rights bodies and assistance to Rohingyas by NGOs and relief agencies should be allowed.”

The United Nations says the Rohingya's situation is the "world's fastest growing refugee crisis".

Subjected to rape, killings, and the destruction of their villages, more than 600,000 Rohingya Muslims have fled to Bangladesh from Myanmar since August. The government of Myanmar, a predominantly Buddhist country, considers them illegal immigrants, not citizens and denies the allegations, insisting that it is fighting terrorism.
